Horror Skit

Name: Horror Film

Duration:2:11

Context: Practice Piece

For this first practice skit of the year, diegetic and non-diegetic sounds have been incorporated into the production of the final film in the hope of achieving an ominous, tense and eerie effect. A dark colour palette is dominantly present within the shots to reinforce and consolidate this theme and concept of horror. Such elements serve the purpose of sending chills down the audience spine, yet feeling a subtle sense of anxiety and curiosity. This particular horror skit was specifically inspired by Jacques Haitkin, the cinematographer of Nightmare on Elm Street.

As the cinematographer of my group, I was able to stay in contact with my actor and conclude the specific time and location in which the filming process will take place in the pre-production stage.I was also able to book almost all of the necessary equipments beforehand to produce the optimum shot, rendering the shot look aesthetically pleasing and interesting to watch. When filming a few specific shots, it was far too shaky and unstable therefore a tripod was used to reduce such unfavourable shakiness. Despite having a mood board to help provide inspirational shots, I believe that a more well developed storyboard would have made the skit look much smoother and clean.

I believe I executed my roles to almost perfection. Despite time restraint boundaries set, I was able to cooperate efficiently and productively with my actor to quickly wrap up the entire shoot to provide more than sufficient amount of time for my editor to compile and edit the filmed footage in post-production. Looking at the cinematography of the video, I strongly feel that ambitious, creative and accurate shots have been executed and incorporated effectively into the skit. Dynamic camera movements have also been integrated into the skit as well which I believe all these cinematography elements helped consolidate and enrich the theme of horror. Although a tripod was used to create a more stabilized shot, I feel that next time I can film perfectly stabilize shots through mastering and learning the DSLR stabilizing gimbal.

Interrogation Scene

Name: Interrogation

Duration:1:10

Context:Practice Piece

In this short interrogation skit, I intended to manipulate lighting as a primary source of inducing the effect of binary opposition, as well as elevating the masculinity of both characters. By doing so, it enriches and gives the skit a more serious tone. The skit has been composed in a simplicity manner, following the basics of shot reverse shot, with the incorporation of ambient sound to give the audience a more realistic and immersive feel. The outcome of this film was significantly inspired by Roger Deakins, the cinematographer of the action and thriller film Skyfall.

Portals

Name:Portals

Duration:1:06

Context: Practice Piece

In this short practice skit, my personal aim was to produce perfectly seamless masking transitions as a form of portals that teleports the protagonist from places to places effortlessly. Ambient sound of all clips are incorporated into the final product of the film to give the video a more realistic atmosphere. The final product of the film was inspired by Robert Leighton who is a British film editor that assisted editing the popular mystery film Now You See Me.

During the pre-production phase, I was able to book all the necessary equipments required to help complete the filming process in order to fully produce the shots I truly hope to achieve. Under time constrictions, I was able to contact my single actor and discuss the location and time in which our schedule is open. During the production stage, I was able to direct my actor without trouble, and executing the shots to perfection in the way I visualized it. Since it was my first time ever trying and using complex features available in premiere pro, I was able to wrap up the production phase without any obstacles and therefore gave sufficient time for editing all the transitions that has been planned. Since the natural lighting on the days that was filmed at was at its optimum weather, I was able to execute my shots without much adjustments to the nature of the environment in the locations that was used to film.

As I was exposed to using such new elements in premiere pro, I did research on the internet to develop my understanding to the features I intend to use to produce my effect which was highly time consuming. Serving as the editor, I believe that I executed my role to perfection in this practice piece. During both pre-production and production stage, the process went entirely smoothly, I was able to save up time to compensate for the time required to edit my clips despite my lack of knowledge in editing.I believe the shots were executed with ambition, creativity and accuracy as most shots were quite dynamic, instead of being static. However, one factor I feel that I should improve on is research in advance on the features I intend to use to produce my effect during pre-production phase so that during post-production the process will run a lot smoother, faster and productive.
